As the first expressway project ever built in Timor-Leste, Suai Highway Phase I is the largest infrastructure construction project since Timor-Leste’s independence. It is also an important project been implemented under the “Belt and Road” initiative, setting an example of win-win cooperation between China and Timor-Leste. The contractor for this historical project is China Overseas Engineering Group Co., Ltd. (COVEC) in joint venture with China Railway Frist Group Co., Ltd. (CRFG), both are subsidiaries of CREC.
This two-way four-lane highway is located on the south coast of Timor-Leste. The highway is projected for speeds up to 100 km/h in flat areas and 60 km/h in mountain areas. Commenced in Jan. 2016, this 30.355-kilometer-long highway has been completed in Nov, 2018. COVEC-CRFG JV has handed over in time a modern, high-quality highway to Timorese side. The opening reduces travel time from Suai to Beaco to less than 2 hours.
