Anthem of CREC—“Trailbreaker”
The expressway section of Wufengshan Yangtze River Bridge opened to traffic on June 30, marking the full operation of the road-rail suspension bridge. Designed by China Railway Major Bridge Reconnaissance & Design Institute Co., Ltd. and constructed by China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Co., Ltd., the suspension bridge is also the world’s first high-speed railway suspension bridge. The railway deck of the bridge was put into operation on December 11, 2020.
Located between the Taizhou Yangtze River Bridge and Runyang Yangtze River Bridge, the Wufengshan Yangtze River Bridge is the third road-rail bridge over the Yangtze River in Jiangsu Province after the completion of the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge in 1968 and the Shanghai-Suzhou-Nantong Yangtze River Bridge in 2020. It is a key project connecting the Lianyungang-Zhenjiang High-speed Railway with the southern expansion of the Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway. It has a total length of 6.4 kilometers and a main span of 1,092 meters. The lower deck has a four-track railway with a designated speed of 250 km/h, and the upper deck features a two-way eight-lane expressway with a maximum speed of 100 km/h.
The Wufengshan Yangtze River Bridge is the world’s first suspension bridge designed in line with Chinese high-speed railway standards. As there was no precedent for building railway lines on a suspension bridge, the theories, design methods and construction faced multiple technical challenges. With its completion, the bridge has broken many technological records.
It is the world’s first high-speed railway suspension bridge and the first road-rail suspension bridge in China; It is the large-span suspension bridge with the largest load in the world; It is the world’s first road-rail suspension bridge supported by plate-steel truss structures; It is the first to use full penetration weld technology to connect the U rib with the top plate; It is the first to use rolled stainless clad steel plat on the groove face of the railway ballast in the world; It is the world’s first suspension bridge whose main cable handles the largest pressure and has the largest diameter; The flat area of its sunk well foundation is the largest in the world.
